School Visits

Shanda would love to visit your school!

Grades K-3:
My 45 minute program centers around robots (fiction and non-fiction) and my STEM-friendly picture book, Doll-E 1.0. Students will also learn about “secret stories” that only illustrators can tell, take away a few practical illustration tips, learn to draw two characters from the book, ask questions, and bust a few robot dance moves too!

Best for 200 or fewer students per session.

Grades 2-5:
This 3-day writing/illustrating workshop was co-developed with an elementary school media specialist to align with writing standards. Over 3 days (three 45-60 minute sessions per group), each student will learn about me (my books, my inspirations, my struggles, and my book dummies), develop a “cheesy” character, draft a “cheesy” story, and then combine it all into a real book dummy to continue revising!

Best for 60 or fewer students per session. Three sessions can be conducted each day for different groups. Tons of fun and cheese ball jokes with a focus on first drafts and their imperfections.

They Said:

“I would certainly recommend Shanda to other schools and organizations. Each part of her presentation was age appropriate, informative, and kept each child’s full attention. The children LOVED her book Doll-E 1.0, and enjoyed meeting a “real live” author-illustrator.”

– Gina, Kindergarten Teacher

“Shanda’s presentation was tops! It was fun and interactive. Doll-E is an awesome book! We’d love to have Shanda back at the Milton Library. Thank you!”

–Liane, Youth Services Librarian

“I would definitely recommend her! My kids loved being able to get up and draw with her!”

– Leslie, Media Specialist

“Our second graders loved every minute of the presentation! They loved making up a story with her, listening to her animated and interactive reading of Doll-E 1.0, and were “fighting” over the opportunity to illustrate alongside of Shanda. She was so engaging and kept the students’ attention the entire time.”

– Lynn, Second Grade Teacher

“Shanda kept her Q & A very interesting for the students. The kids loved her answers and she kept their attention throughout the whole Skype session. It was a great literary experience for our students in Leigh. Thanks!! It was so much fun!!”

– Kylie, Media/Tech Integrationist

“Thank you so much for coming! One 5th grader made sure to stick his head in the media center yesterday on his way to dismissal to say he loved your visit! I heard similar from many others! Yes, I will be bringing you back. 😊 I feel like we met a rock star!”

– Beth, Media Specialist
