School/Group Visits

I would love to visit your school!

Grades K-3: “Robots”
My 45-60 minute program centers around robots (fiction and non-fiction) and my STEM-friendly picture book, DOLL-E 1.0. Students will also learn about “secret stories” that only illustrators can tell, take away a few practical illustration tips, learn to draw characters from the book, ask questions, and bust a few robot dance moves too!

Grades K-5: “Drones”
This 45-60 minute program looks to drones and my STEM-friendly picture book, T-BONE THE DRONE (the companion story to DOLL-E 1.0). I love to fly drones, and in my research I learned the possibilities are truly as big as the sky when it comes to these little aerial machines! Monitoring wildlife, search and rescue, planting trees, and even firefighting are being transformed by drones. Students will be empowered by this fairly new and extremely exciting technology. And of course, my visit wouldn’t be complete without a step-by-step drone drawing lesson and a flying demonstration!

Grades 3-5:
STEM Workshop Jumpstart
With spare parts, Makey-Makey, and Scratch, students will create a doll/robot figure and program it to talk! (Use this “Making and Literacy with DOLL-E 1.0” guide written by Colleen Graves at labz.makeymakey.com). I would love to jumpstart your workshop by visiting on the first day to read DOLL-E 1.0 (big kids dig story time too), show lots of cool examples, start the brainstorming process, and generally get the students excited about building, coding, and the project at hand (45-60 minutes). Then, you’ll guide your students through the project at your own pace over several days. At the workshop end, I’d love to see the finished dolls/robots in action via Skype!

They Said:

“You were amazing with the kids! They love your book so to hear it read by you, to see you draw the characters and to hear the answers to their questions was the best.”

– Shannon McClintock Miller, Future Ready Librarians Spokesperson. K12 Teacher Librarian at Van Meter School, Iowa. Speaker. Author. Consultant.

“Shanda gave a wonderful and very entertaining presentation about robots and being an author and illustrator. It was very engaging and very kid friendly. They loved that Shanda walked around and visited with the kids before the presentation. They especially loved it when she read aloud her story in an interactive way. Shanda also showed how an illustration can change what the reader reads with just a few changes in an illustration. The kids also loved the side by side illustration lesson and how they can also illustrate with just a few steps in a very easy manner. She was a hit. Shanda even received some hugs from 1st graders today and one 1st grader told her that she was the first author that she has ever met! She made some lasting impressions!”
– Ida, Media Specialist

“Shanda’s presentation was tops! It was fun and interactive. Doll-E is an awesome book! We’d love to have Shanda back at the Milton Library. Thank you!”
– Liane, Youth Services Librarian

“Shanda was so wonderful to work with! She is professional, friendly, great with the kids, and a talented writer/illustrator/speaker!”
– Lauren, Teacher and Leadership Team Member

“Shanda McCloskey gave a terrific presentation to our PreK-2nd grade students! She was engaging, the kids had a blast, and they learned so much! Her presentation was the perfect mix of fun – the kids did a robot dance, and education – the writing process and technology. I highly recommend Shanda for author visits!”
-Sara, Elementary School Librarian

“Shanda kept her Q & A very interesting for the students. The kids loved her answers and she kept their attention throughout the whole Skype session. It was a great literary experience for our students in Leigh. Thanks!! It was so much fun!!”
– Kylie, Media/Tech Integrationist

“Thank you so much for coming! One 5th grader made sure to stick his head in the media center yesterday on his way to dismissal to say he loved your visit! I heard similar from many others! Yes, I will be bringing you back. 😊 I feel like we met a rock star!”
– Beth, Media Specialist
